Crossovers and compact SUVs, like the Subaru Outback and the Toyota RAV4, are great options for all sorts of drivers. They've got the space, safety features, and versatility to handle everything, from your daily commute to a family camping trip. So, which one is right for you?

To help drivers in Ithaca decide, Maguire Subaru put them up against each other in this 2020 Subaru Outback vs. Toyota RAV4 comparison.

Performance & Capability

The Subaru Outback offers two dependable engines. The most powerful engine option is a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that gets up to 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive comes standard and helps the Outback tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The Toyota RAV4 doesn't give you any engine options. Only one engine is available-and it isn't as powerful. The standard engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that only delivers 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. While it can also tow up to 3,500 pounds, its standard front-wheel drive won't provide you with as much capability.

Subaru Outback Interior Dimensions

The Outback has a roomy interior with seating for up to five people. There's space for everyone to relax with 109 cubic feet of passenger room. This open layout offers 42.8 inches of legroom up front and 39.5 inches of legroom in the back seats. Even tall drivers can enjoy sitting behind the wheel with 40.1 inches of headroom. Meanwhile, three people can comfortably sit side by side in the back with 57.4 inches of shoulder room.

The Toyota RAV4 also has seating for five people, but it may feel like a tight squeeze with only 98.9 cubic feet of passenger space. That gives you only 41 inches of front legroom and 37.8 inches of rear legroom. The driver might feel more cramped, too, with just 37.7 inches of headroom up front. Plus, the back seat is smaller with only 56.4 inches of shoulder room.

Both vehicles are designed to load lots of cargo, too. Inside each one, you'll find a convenient trunk as well as 60/40-split flat-folding rear seats. With the back seats folded down, the Subaru Outback has up to 75.7 cubic feet of cargo room. The Toyota RAV4 can't carry as much with only 69.8 cubic feet of cargo room.

Subaru Outback Safety Features

The Subaru Outback is loaded with safety features. It delivers reliable traction with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and keeps you safe with eight airbags. There's also lots of smart technology that can help you avoid accidents.

The available DriverFocus™ Distraction Mitigation System can detect signs of drowsy or distracted driving and remind you to focus on the road. To monitor everything around your Outback, there's the EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology system. It gives you more awareness with standard features, such as:

  • Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering
  • Pre-Collision Braking
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management
  • Lane Departure and Sway Warning

The Toyota RAV4 also comes with eight airbags and its own driver-assistance system. However, it doesn't have standard All-Wheel Drive or offer anything like the DriverFocus™ Distraction Mitigation System feature.
