Compact SUVs, like the Subaru Outback and Honda CR-V, are solid options for getting around the Finger Lakes. They both offer convenient cargo room and lots of useful features. So, which one is right for you? To help drivers and families in Ithaca decide, Maguire Subaru had them face off in this 2020 Subaru Outback vs. Honda CR-V comparison.

Specs & Capability

The Subaru Outback is ready to go off-roading or take you through your morning commute. It has an 8.7-inch ground clearance and offers lots of power under the hood. There are two engines to choose from. The base powertrain is a 2.5L 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine that's capable of towing up to 2,700 pounds. The larger engine is a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine that can haul up to 3,500 pounds.

The Honda CR-V sits a little lower with its 8.2-inch ground clearance. While it comes with a capable engine, it unfortunately doesn't give you any options. It can only run on a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This small powertrain can only tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Infotainment System

Whether you're towing your boat to the lake or on your daily commute, the Subaru Outback offers a fun drive with a user-friendly infotainment system. The dashboard comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, but an 11.6-inch screen is also available.

Both options have standard smartphone compatibility. For example, Bluetooth® makes it easy to stream music and make hands-free phone calls. You'll also be able to access your phone's apps through Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto™. For more variety in your music, both SiriusXM® All Access Radio and HD Radio® come standard, too.

The Honda CR-V also comes with a Bluetooth®-compatible infotainment system, but its standard screen is just a 5-inch LCD monitor. While features like Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and SiriusXM® Radio are offered, none of them are standard or even available on the base trim of the CR-V.

Safety Features

The Outback also gives you peace of mind with standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and eight airbags. The system includes a driver's knee airbag, front passenger seat cushion airbag, and side curtain airbags.

There are also lots of driver-assist features in the Outback that can help prevent accidents. The EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology bundle comes standard and gives you more awareness during your drive. It includes features such as:

  • Pre-Collision Braking
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management
  • Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning
  • Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering

The Honda CR-V also includes some similar driver-assistance features. However, it doesn't provide you with as much protection with only six airbags. Plus, it doesn't come with the dependability of standard All-Wheel Drive.
