The Subaru Outback is a capable crossover that's great for everything from off-roading to loading up for a family road trip. So, how far can it go before you need to stop for gas?

To show drivers and families in Ithaca how often you'll need to make a pit stop, Maguire Subaru looks at the 2019 Subaru Outback MPG.

Subaru Outback Fuel Economy

The 2019 Subaru Outback can get up to an EPA-estimated 25 MPG city and 32 MPG highway. It achieves this impressive MPG rating thanks to an aerodynamic design, light curb weight of 3,624 pounds, and an intelligent Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

In its top two trim levels, you'll find a larger engine. It delivers more horsepower and can get up to an EPA-estimated 20 MPG city and 27 MPG highway.

With both powertrains, you'll be able to travel a long way in between stops for gas with an 18.5-gallon fuel tank.

Subaru Outback Specs

The standard engine for the 2019 Subaru Outback is a 2.5L 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® that gets up to 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. It's an efficient powertrain with an Active Valve Control System.

This engine is standard on the first four trim levels and makes the Outback a Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV)

Its larger alternative is a 3.6L SUBARU BOXER® engine that features a Dual Active Valve Control System. This engine runs with a Lineartronic® High-Torque CVT and can produce up to 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque.

While the additional power does add to the vehicle's curb weight, you can still count on it to give you a solid performance. It's even been certified as an Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (ULEV).

Both powertrains sit 8.7 inches above the ground. With its high ground clearance and large intake vents, this crossover is both capable and streamlined for better fuel economy.

Subaru Outback Efficient Features

The Subaru Outback is filled with built in features to make your drive more efficient. On top of giving you reliable gear shifting, both transmissions have a Hill Holder® function that'll make traveling up steep roads easier for your engine.

You'll get just as much dependability and safety on your way down too. Hill Descent Control helps you travel at a safe, constant speed when you're on a sharp incline.

When you're on the highway, you can make the most of your fuel economy with Electronic Cruise Control or maintain a safe distance from other cars at the same time with Adaptive Cruise Control.

While the Outback is capable on any terrain with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, your drivetrain can also help you save gas. The Traction Control System makes sure your wheels can always grip the road, while Active Torque Vectoring helps your engine expend less energy when you're turning.
