Compact cars, like the Subaru Impreza and Nissan Altima, always seem to offer a sleek design and a fun driving experience. Which one has more of what you're looking for, though? Maguire Subaru put this Subaru Impreza vs. Nissan Altima comparison together to help drivers in Ithaca decide.

Subaru Impreza vs Nissan Altima Interior

Both the Subaru Impreza and Nissan Altima feature seating for up to five people. What sets the Impreza apart, though, is that it essentially gives you two cabins to choose from. It's available as either a sleek compact sedan or a capable 5-door hatchback.

Each one offers a relaxing atmosphere, especially for passengers in the back seats. In the Subaru sedan, they can enjoy 37.2 inches of rear headroom, while the hatchback features a little more space to stretch out with 38 inches of headroom. Both styles then have 36.5 inches of rear legroom.

The Nissan Altima is only available as a sedan and it will feel a little smaller to your passengers. It gives them just 36.9 inches of rear headroom and 35.2 inches of rear legroom.

Subaru Impreza vs Nissan Altima Capability

The Subaru Impreza provides you with the same versatility you'd get out of the brand's SUVs. It comes standard in Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. This system features Active Torque Vectoring, Vehicle Dynamics Control, and a Traction Control System. You'll also have a choice between a Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and a 5-speed manual transmission.

The Nissan Altima is available in all-wheel drive too. Unfortunately, it doesn't come standard. While front-wheel drive is standard, the Nissan does have its own Traction Control System and Vehicle Dynamics Control. However, it can't handle as well without Active Torque Vectoring. Plus, it's only available with a CVT. A capable manual transmission isn't even offered.

Subaru Impreza vs Nissan Altima Safety

On top of its standard all-wheel drive, the Subaru Impreza helps keep you safe with a pair of front airbags, seat-mounted front side-impact airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and side-curtain airbags that cover both rows of seats.

You'll also be able to rely on the available EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology bundle. It uses smart technology to monitor your drives, give you more awareness, and prevent accidents with features like:

  • Pre-Collision Braking
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure and Sway Warning with Lane Keep Assist
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management

With EyeSight®, the advanced airbag system, and all-wheel drive, the Subaru Impreza was named a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Nissan Altima also has front, front side, knee, and side-curtain airbags, and offers several similar driver-assistance features. However, it did not earn the same IIHS high safety rating.
