Your Subaru Impreza is both reliable and fun to drive. Like most cars though, it will need maintenance and service sometimes to stay in good condition. If you're not sure when to visit the service center, your dashboard can remind you.

To help drivers in Ithaca learn more about what these lights and logos are trying to tell you, Maguire Subaru reviews some of the most important Subaru Impreza dashboard lights.

Yellow Caution Lights

When your car needs maintenance or there's been a malfunction, your Impreza will let you know by using a yellow light. These yellow indicator lights aren't urgent, but you shouldn't ignore them either. Schedule service as soon as you can. Some of the yellow light you should be aware of are:

  • Check Engine - Several malfunctions can make the words CHECK ENGINE light up on your dashboard, but it usually means there's an issue with the emissions control system.
  • Engine Oil Level - If you haven't had an oil change in a while and you're low on oil you'll eventually see a yellow light that looks like and old-fashioned oil can.
  • Tire Pressure- The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) measures the air pressure for all four tires and your spare. If any of them are low on air, it'll let you know by using a light that looks like a flat tire with an exclamation mark in the center.
  • ABS - The letters ABS are a sign that there's a problem with your anti-lock braking system. You can still stop safely using your main brakes but get these fixed quickly.

Red Warning Lights

When a red light pops up on your dashboard, it often requires immediate attention. These are more urgent problems than the yellow malfunctions lights. In some cases, you should either head straight for the service center or pull over and call for a tow truck. A few of the red lights you should look out for are:

  • Oil Pressure Warning - If the oil can icon comes up in red instead of yellow, it means that you're severely overdue for an oil change. Do not continue driving with low oil pressure because it could damage your engine.
  • Charge Warning - A light that looks like your battery will appear if your battery is low or there's a problem with the electrical system. Try to conserve power by unplugging any devices and make your way to the service center.
  • Brake System - When your parking brake is on, you'll either see the word BRAKE or an exclamation mark in a circle. If either of these remain on after you've disengaged the parking brake, it means there's problem with your brakes.
