Subcompact SUVs like the Subaru Crosstrek and Honda HR-V offer the kind of performance that's both sporty and capable. So, which one is right for you? To help drivers in Ithaca decide, Maguire Subaru put this Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V comparison together to show you what each one has to offer.

Specs & Capability

The Subaru Crosstrek runs on a 2.0L SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder engine that gets up to 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. This system has a standard 6-speed manual transmission, but a Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) is available.

You can use this powertrain to bring some extra cargo or get through tough conditions. It has a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds and runs on standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The Crosstrek also rides high with an 8.7-inch ground clearance.

The Honda HR-V, unfortunately, can't provide you with as much power. Its 1.8L 4-cylinder engine can only get up to 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. You also won't be able to choose your transmission, as a CVT is the only option available.

The Honda isn't as capable either. Front-wheel drive is standard, though all-wheel drive is available. It isn't made for towing, though, and sits lower to the ground with a 7.3-inch ground clearance.

Safety & Driver-Assistance Features

Standard all-wheel drive is just the beginning of all the ways the Subaru Crosstrek can help keep you safe. The interior features seven airbags, including side-curtain airbags that cover both rows of seats. There are also lots of driver-assistance features than can give you more awareness during your trips around town.

The available EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology can help prevent accidents by looking out for nearly every angle of your SUV. Some of the features you'll be able to rely on include:

  • Pre-Collision Braking
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management
  • Lane Departure and Sway Warning with Lane Keep Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control

For its dependable drivetrain, advanced airbag system, and EyeSight® features, the Subaru Crosstrek was named a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Honda HR-V also offers lots of driver-assistance features. However, with standard front-wheel drive and only six airbags, it was not able to earn the same high safety rating from the IIHS.

Infotainment System

The Subaru Crosstrek also comes with plenty of features to help you have a fun and easy drive. There's a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen in the dashboard for your infotainment system. Connect your phone via Bluetooth® and you'll be able to make hands-free calls and stream music. Plus, you can access your favorite apps through features like:

  • Apple CarPlay®
  • Android Auto™
  • Aha™ smartphone app integration

The Honda HR-V doesn't feature the same level of smartphone compatibility. Aha™ isn't available, while Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ don't come standard. Plus, while the vehicle's infotainment system is Bluetooth® compatible, its standard screen is just a 5-inch LCD monitor.
